Prepare for IELTS Writing Task
What is the IELTS Writing Exam Pattern?
The IELTS Writing part consists of two parts and must be completed in one hour. In the first part, i.e. IELTS 1 writing task, you will be given a task based on graphical or pictorial information. It can be a bar chart, pie chart, table, graph, map or chart. As a result, you will be required to write a 150-word report that accurately describes what the information in the chart or image represents. You should aim to complete this part in 20 minutes as the second part, Also, the IELTS 2 writing task, is more difficult and you will need at least 40 minutes to complete it.
IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2
The second task is more demanding. You are expected to produce a written argument of approximately 250 words on a given topic and to organize your response clearly, giving a few examples to support your point.
IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2 scores are calculated based on the following criteria:
Task achievement, task response, consistency, grammatical range and accuracy, and lexical resource.
For further explanation of each criterion, see the British Council website for details on IELTS Writing Task 1 and IELTS Writing Task 2, respectively.
The score for write task 2 receives double weighting from write task 1. For example, if you get a band score of 8 for write task 1 and a band score of 6 for writing task 2, the overall score will be calculated by taking the two scores from task 2 and a score for task 1. So the score is 8 + 6 + 6 = 20/3 = 6.66. IELTS will round the score to 6.5, which will be your total score.
